Circulatory Challenges Decoding the Enigma of Blood Clots
Blood clots, also known as thromboses, are clumps of blood that have ...
Blood clots, also known as thromboses, are clumps of blood that have changed from a liquid state to a gel-like or semisolid state. They are a natural response of the ...body to prevent excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. However, blood clots can become problematic if they form inside blood vessels without a clear injury or if they do not dissolve properly.
There are two main types of blood clots:
Arterial Clots: These clots occur in arteries, which are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. Arterial clots can lead to serious conditions such as heart attacks or strokes when they block the blood flow to vital organs.
Venous Clots: These clots form in veins, which are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. Venous clots can lead to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs, and PE occurs when a clot travels to the lungs and blocks blood flow.
Risk factors for developing blood clots include:
Immobility: Prolonged periods of immobility, such as during long flights or bed rest, can increase the risk of clot formation.
Surgery: Some surgical procedures can increase the risk of blood clots.
Trauma: Injuries that damage blood vessels can trigger clot formation.
Certain Medical Conditions: Conditions like cancer, certain autoimmune disorders, and heart conditions can increase clotting risk.
Smoking: Smoking damages blood vessels and increases clotting risk.
Hormonal Birth Control: Some forms of hormonal birth control can raise the risk of blood clots.
Family History: A history of blood clots in close family members can increase risk.
Age: The risk of blood clots tends to increase with age.
